Thursday, the 20th of October 2022, saw the Leinster Schools Athletics combined events take place in the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown, Dublin.
Bridgetown College were represented by no less than 3 competitors (the 2nd highest number of competitors from any school in County Wexford). Miss Manning will be very proud that her legacy lives on in Bridgetown College.
The Minor Boys (U/14) event saw the 2 boys Conor Hancock and Aaron Hancock compete over 5 different disciplines, with a field of over 60 competitors. The events were Long Jump, 60m Hurdles, Shot Putt, 200m and 800m.
Ava Barry carried the Bridgetown colours in the minor girls where the 200m was replaced by the High Jump. Ava’s best performances came in the 800m (2min44secs) and the long jump (4.14m) and when added to her scores in the other 3 events saw Ava finish in a fantastic 7th place from a total of 53 starters.
Conor’s finest moment was his mammoth effort in the 800m where he recorded a stunning 2min 25sec time. A time that would compare to the best of the junior, inter and senior boys on the day. This effort ultimately achieved him 13th place from a total of over 60 starters.
Aaron, not to be outshone by his older brother, recorded a pb of 8.91 meters in the shot putt and finished in the top half of the field although over a year out of age still.
Well done to all 3 who did Bridgetown college proud on the day. Competing at this level is a great achievement and requires a lot of commitment. Apart from the endless training Ava, Conor and Aaron left their homes shortly after 6am and did not return till nearly 10pm and still presented themselves for class Friday morning with a smile on their faces.
It should also be acknowledged that Conor and Aaron did this knowing that they had another arduous day ahead of them just 3 days later when both would represent Kilmore Athletics club in the Leinster cross country in County Louth on Sunday.
